Dr John Money Wing
Signal were engaged to complete the planning, design and
construction of an extension to the Eastern Southland Gallery in
Gore. This $1M redevelopment houses the internationally recognised
personal art collection of expatriate New Zealander Dr John Money.
The collection, was moved from Dr Money's home in Baltimore in the
United States by Gore Gallery curator Jim Geddes. The collection
includes works by Theo Schoon and Rita Angus and is complimented by
donated art work from Ralph Hotere.
Climate Controlled Environment
Refurbishment of the gallery (a 1909 Carnegie Building),
included a new architecturally sympathetic wing. It comprised 400m2
gallery space and storage and features a highly sensitive climate
controlled environment. This regulates temperature to 19oC +/- 1oC
and humidity to 55% +/- 5%.
Reinvesting Funds into the Gallery
Initial planning work by Signal required the finalisation of a
subdivision of land owned by the Department of Courts upon which
the extension has been constructed. While resolving this issue
Signal identified an opportunity to redesign the new extension
allowing all facilities to be accommodated on a single level,
rather than two storeys as originally designed. This eliminated the
need for a lift ($50,000) and minimised the effect of shading onto
adjoining properties. This which assisted in obtaining the Resource
Consent.
